How to Host Your Website on your Own Computer

Sep 7th, 2015

A frequently-asked question:

I live in Malaysia and I have good Internet connection. I am thinking to host my own website on my computer. Is this a good idea?

Expert Answer: It is not your fault you got confused. There are many popular hosting companies in Malaysia such as Mesra Hosting and Datakl.

However, they can be expensive and the support can be hit-or-miss.

The Truth about Hosting in Malaysia

This is something your local web design companies do not want you to know. You do not really need to have use a hosting in your own country. To save money, you should seriously consider the web hosts from the US or Europe because they are way cheaper. The loading speed of your pages are also not significantly faster, even if you host locally.

The Truth about Hosting Your Files Using Your Own Computer

Hosting at home gives the highest level of control over the equipment. Physical access allows one to ‘own’ the server. Hosting a server at home puts great power in the owner’s hands, but ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ (to quote Stan Lee and others), to which one might add ‘and great pain’. DSL and cable providers are not always hospitable to Web hosting. Some ISPs block ports needed for hosting (for example, http, ftp, sftp and ssh ports). Others explicitly forbid web hosting in their contracts, or have contract clauses which allow them to raise prices and penalize customers who run servers. Standard DSL (at least in the US) is asymmetric, offering a download rate of 1.5 Mbit per second, and an upload rate that is 1/4 to 1/2 of that speed. This may be enough for personal Web pages that are reviewed only a few times a day, but once the hosted site becomes popular, or if there are large files for viewing or download, viewers may experience lags or even failures (time-outs) when they attempt to access the server. The heat generated by the server, which increases with the popularity (and increased load) of the site, may require a fan or air conditioner, unless one plans to use the server room as a sauna. In the summer, especially in hot and humid climates, cooling may be required to keep the server from overheating and possibly even locking up.Hackers can potentially access your internal network through this server, and get confidential personal information, such as correspondence and financial data. No easy upgrade or downgrade option sand anything goes wrong, you have to fix it personally.

Quality Hosting and Cheap Plans

What you need is a reliable hosting. An excellent hosting should have:

  1. maintain the server for you
  2. powerful and latest web hosting technology
  3. gives more-than-enough storage,
  4. 24/7 experienced and responsive technical support via chat, phone, email or ticketing systems
  5. offer quality service at cheaper rates

  1. No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
  2. You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

It depends on what your website is for, and how important it is. If it is just a personal web site, and not business critical, then you could go with one of the free web hosting services. I use [http://000webhost.com].

But, web hosting is very cheap these days, as low as 2.95 a month – [http://www.lunarpages.com/starter-hosting/].

As previously stated by other answers, there are a lot of free places you can host your website and the answer will vary on what you want to host exactly.

One example of free hosting is at sites.google.com. It’s. of course, hosted by Google. You get 100MB quota.

It may be your current internet provider:

If your current internet provider is Earthlink, AOL, SBC Global and others which provide a homepage; you can easily FTP your own webpage designs as a new homepage even design one from scratch using Netscape Composer. And using a redirection service such as mydomain.com or the forwarding of a parked domain name at godaddy.com, you can easily "mask" the homepage URL with a proper domain name. So in a sense, you have a working ecommerce website disguised as a homepage while still paying your normal monthly Internet provider’s access and hosting fee of the homepage.

    Good luck!
